What is a Subscriber Management System (SMS), and why TEC 57025 matters

The SMS is the least glamorous part of an IPTV stack and the one auditors scrutinise most. Here’s what it does, and why getting it right decides whether you pass.

What an SMS is

A Subscriber Management System is the business brain of an operator. It onboards a subscriber with KYC, puts them on a plan or bouquet, bills them, invoices them (GST-ready), and pushes their entitlements into the CAS. It is the single source of truth for who is a paying subscriber.

Why it must reconcile with the CAS

Here’s the trap that fails audits: the SMS says a subscriber is active, but the CAS never got the entitlement — or vice versa. The counts drift, and an auditor spots it immediately. A well-built platform reconciles the two continuously so drift is designed out. In HySky SMS, entitlements flow to the CAS over authenticated calls, keeping both in lockstep.

Why TEC 57025 matters

TEC 57025:2022 is the specification an Indian operator’s SMS is measured against. It covers how subscribers, plans and billing must be handled and recorded. Building to it isn’t just a checkbox — it’s what lets you pass the audit and prove your subscriber base is what you say it is.

What good looks like

Clean subscriber lifecycle and KYC, plans and bouquets with correct NCF handling, GST tax invoices, payment integration, and a live link to the CAS. That’s the difference between a spreadsheet and a compliant operator platform.
