When you protect an IPTV or OTT stream, the encryption is the easy part — the real question is how the decryption key reaches the player, safely. That’s what a DRM does. Two names come up constantly for operators: ClearKey and Widevine.
Your content is encrypted once. The player needs the key to decrypt it — but only if the viewer is entitled, on an approved device, in the right region. The DRM is the system that delivers (or refuses) that key. ClearKey and Widevine are two ways of delivering it.
ClearKey is part of the Encrypted Media Extensions standard. The key is delivered in a straightforward, well-documented way. It’s easy to implement, works across standards-compliant players, and is ideal for controlled environments — your own set-top box or app, on your own network. The trade-off: the key protection isn’t hardware-backed, so ClearKey alone isn’t accepted by premium studios for high-value content.
Widevine (Google’s DRM) delivers keys through a secure, hardware-backed pipeline with multiple security levels. It’s the DRM premium content owners expect before they license you their catalogue. The cost is complexity: license-server integration, per-device provisioning and security-level handling.
