Most IPTV reference architectures are quietly written for the US or Europe. Drop them into India unchanged and they fail in specific, predictable ways — peering, CGNAT, fiber, compliance. Here’s what actually has to change.

There is a lot of good IPTV literature. Almost all of it assumes conditions that don’t hold in India: open settlement-free peering, static IP addressing, reliable power and fiber, and a single content language. Each of those assumptions, when it breaks, changes the architecture.
The Western mental model is ‘peer at the exchange, reach everyone’. In India, the large eyeball networks largely don’t open-peer — they want private interconnect or paid transit. So ‘reach’ is not automatic; your addressable audience over an IXP is mostly the regional and local ISPs, with the giants handled separately. Delivery cost and reach both hinge on this.
A huge share of Indian broadband sits behind carrier-grade NAT — many subscribers sharing one public IP. Any design that keys identity, geo-location or fraud-detection off the IP address falls apart: thousands of legitimate users look like one, or one abuser hides among thousands. Device identity has to be established at the app / token layer, not the network layer.
If your CAS or anti-piracy logic assumes one subscriber = one IP, CGNAT will make it either lock out honest users or wave through shared credentials. Bind entitlements to the device and a token, never to the IP.
Fiber cuts are frequent enough that a single-path link is an operational liability, not a theoretical one — which is why a national design needs protected / dual-path mid-mile, not one wavelength. Power and last-mile reliability push the same way: assume interruption, design for it.
EPG, logos, catch-up and packaging have to handle many languages and strong regional preferences. A single-language guide and a one-size line-up simply don’t fit the market.
TRAI/TEC compliance — CAS (TEC 57015), SMS (TEC 57025), Schedule-X fingerprinting, three-year logging, geo/device locking — is a legal precondition, not a feature. An architecture that treats it as an afterthought fails audits regardless of how well it streams. See our compliance overview.
