What auditors actually check (and why operators fail)

The most common reason operators fail a TRAI/DAS audit isn’t bad streaming — it’s that a platform which works perfectly can’t prove it works. Auditors check evidence, not experience. Here’s what they actually look at.

Operators preparing for their first audit almost always prepare the wrong thing. They make sure the channels look good. But an empanelled auditor never watches your picture quality — they audit your records. The question is not ‘does it stream?’ but ‘can you prove, on paper, exactly who watched what and that your systems did what the rules require?’

What they actually check

Why operators fail

The recurring failure is not a broken platform — it’s an unprovable one. Logs that could have been edited, counts that don’t reconcile, reports in the wrong format, missing pairing history. The system worked; the evidence didn’t exist or didn’t hold up.

The single most common technical failure is drift: the SMS says a subscriber is active, but the CAS never received the entitlement (or vice-versa). Over months the counts diverge, and an auditor spots it in minutes. A platform that reconciles the two continuously makes drift impossible; one that syncs them by hand accumulates it.

Tamper-evidence is the quiet make-or-break

If your logs live in an ordinary table an admin can update, an auditor cannot trust them — and shouldn’t. Records need to be append-only and tamper-evident (hash-chained / WORM), so their integrity is provable, not asserted. This is also what lets those same records prove your subscriber base to broadcasters and buyers later.

How HySky handles it

HySky writes entitlement, plan, bouquet and device changes to a hash-chained, append-only audit log, reconciles SMS and CAS continuously over authenticated calls, and generates the full auditor pack — Schedule-3 reports, weekly evidence, reconciliation workbooks, pairing/de-pairing logs and query evidence — in the accepted formats on demand. What normally takes weeks of manual collation is produced in minutes, and it holds up because the underlying records can’t be silently changed. More in our compliance overview.

This is the kind of problem HySky is built around.
